Education
Life Sciences & Society provides programs that inform students and engages them in dialogue on the ethical, legal, and social issues raised by advances in the life sciences. One objective is to create cross-disciplinary educational opportunities for students to learn about the issues encountered in the life sciences. Another objective is to work with faculty and staff from across schools and colleges to identify, promote, and enhance research at the interface of the life sciences, social sciences, and humanities. LSS does this by offering and supporting innovative activities that stimulate discussion on the human implications of developments in the life sciences.
Major initiatives past and present include:
Six Weeks to Genomic Awareness
Six Weeks to Genomic Awareness is a series of online modules that establishes the groundwork for comprehending genomic advances and identifying the significance of genomics to public health. The course is structured in 6 "weekly" units taught by Sharon Kardia, PhD (Unit 1-4), Toby Citrin, JD (Unit 5), and Pam Clouser McCann, MS, CGC (Unit 6).
- Introduction to Genomics
- Genes in Populations
- Genetic Testing
- Gene-Environment Interactions
- Ethical, Legal and Social Issues
- An Overview of State and National Resources
Teaching
LSS sponsors Applications in Public Health Genetics, Epid 513. This hands-on course helps students get practical experience with the community, whether designing educational materials for the general public (Fall 2008, Winter 2006), or helping out with the mission of community organizations (Fall 2006).
LSS offered a fall seminar in 2006 for students in public health and other schools. The course was entitled When Faith Meets Science: An Evolving Dialogue on New Choices and New Technologies (UC 475). The course dynamically involved students, faculty and the public in community forums about the difficult questions in the life sciences. Link to description and video of fall forums sponsored through UC 475.
Curriculum Guide
LSS has created a curriculum guide that details all of the courses offered at the University of Michigan that address the ethical, legal, social, and cultural dimensions of life sciences. The guide is designed to enhance the efficiency of advising and course selection in the life sciences.
Research
There is an important need to study the implications of the chasm between public understanding, research, and the interface of the life sciences, arts, and humanities. In addition, advancing technologies are beginning to transform the relationship between the business of science and the practice of health care. LSS is committed to identifying students whose research addresses this need and connecting them to faculty who will enhance their educational experience.
